This month we had a joint meeting with the Sir Isaac Brock Chapter of the International Plastic Modellers Society (St. Catharines and Niagara).

Hugh is a member of both clubs and this joint meeting allowed him to make his Resin Casting presentation to both groups at once.

Tijs brought in his scratch build of the Algonquin Alligator amphibious logging paddle wheel boat he had just completed.

He related a story of how one of these powerful boats had saved a logging community during a forest fire by hauling the homes to safety.

Brandon brought his 1:48 Admiralty scale scratch build model of HMS Euryalus back to show us his progress.  He has a box chock full of frame pieces he has cut out.  These have yet to be glued together and fitted to the keel... but progress continues.

John brought in the two Mortar Gun Barrels he is presently working on for his 1:64 scale scratch build of HM Bomb Vessel Granado (1742).  One is the 13" calibre forward gun and the other is the 10" calibre aft gun.  This ship had only two masts.  The fore mast does not exist on this ship as it interfered with the mortar gun.  John says that the lack of a foremast and sails made her difficult to handle.

John has built up the shape of the mortar barrels with various diameter tubing pieces slipped over each other and CA (cyanoacrylate) glued together.  Presently the pieces are primer painted and still affixed to handling sticks stuck into the muzzles.

He intends to complete the detail adornments, such as the King's crest, by applying layers of weld bond with a paint brush.  He will complete the shaping of the crest by carving away any waste to reveal the details.

Phil brought in a Capstan he has scratch built for his Spanish Whaling Galleon San Juan (1565).  The capstan was used to do heavy work like hauling in the anchor.  Each handle of the capstan would be powered by the brute force of up to two deck hands, rotating the drum onto which the cable, rope or hawser was turned or wrapped prior to it being stored below deck.  Phil's capstan is made of pear wood and he gave it a coating of boiled tung oil as a finish.

​Alan brought in his incompleted scratch built 9 Pound Naval Gun (1768) mounted in his display case.

The carriage is painted oak and maple, and blackened brass and copper.  The mounting board is maple plywood, cut and gouged to simulate a gun deck onboard ship.  The plank caulking lines were scribed and gouged, then darkened with a soft pencil lead.   Deck plugs are maple dowelling.

 The base frame was routered in poplar and fitted with a sliding information tray.  Both information plates are laser engraved aluminium. The clear acrylic case was made by a local company.  It is secured to the base by two ornamental pins made from halves of a cupboard hinge pin.  This holds the cover to the base if the display should be lifted incorrectly (by the case).  The 9 pound cannon is presently a mockup 2D print but the final version will be 3D printed at a local library.  Alan has already created the 3D model and requiste .stl file that the printing machine will work from.  He hopes to have this for the next meeting in December.
