Our meeting was scheduled to be held in NOTL but due to unforseen circumstances was relocated to Welland. The theme of the meeting was scale model rope making (ropewalk and rope serving). David presented his ropewalk and rope serving demonstrations. He made it look easy and suggested it is quite simple to build your own devices to make and serve your own scale ropes. His ropewalk was originally parts from his Meccano set. David explained left and right hand lay, stretching and hardening. He also demonstrated some simple methods to simulate eye splicing of these tiny threads! ************************ Brandon had brought three different size naval cannon barrels he had made with the 3D printer at his local Library. The material is PLA (Polylactic Acid) plastic. Derek brought in his model of a Mediterranean Fishing Boat. This was the first model he had built. Presently he is working on a model of the Bluenose that we hope he will bring to one of our next meetings. Alan showed his maquette (clay model) prototype of the figurehead for his HMS Bellerophon. The model is 3X larger than what will be carved in wood for his ship. This was his first model sculpture. TIJS announced his Chris Craft motor boat is presently on display at Lee Valley Tools in Niagara Falls. It replaces Ron's model ship that had been on display for a few months now. Our guest visitor, Mike K. Ng from Markham brought in his models made from CARD stock. These are almost completely made of paper; cut, bent, and moulded to shape, then glued, sanded, puttied, sanded yet again and painted to reveal unbelievable realistic models. The first model he displayed was of the RMS Queen Mary 2 . This was followed by a tiny Irish Escort Tug Boat Alex, and two coast guard ice breakers, CCG Louis S. St- Laurent and the USCGC Healy. He wrapped up by showing us the ship he is presently working on, the Canadian Halifax Class Frigate HMS Toronto (FFH 333). He plans to have this ready for a show in October. This was a true delight!
